WHAT SIZE SHOULD ENTRANCE MATTING BE?

Entrance Mat Length

How much entrance matting should I specify?

We are often asked, how much entrance matting do we need to specify? This is an important design factor to consider, especially since visitors don’t always take the time to wipe their feet in commercial and public spaces. While the answer can vary from project to project, lets delve into the general industry recommendations.

GEGGUS and the WELL Standard recommend a mat length (walking direction) of :

- 3 to 5 metres for normal dirt pick-up (in applications such as educational building).

- 6 to 7 metres for heavy traffic areas (such as office buildings or shopping centres).

- 8 to 10 metres for extreme traffic applications (such as airports or sport venues).

Important Note: A minimum mat length of 2.1m in the Walking Direction (Length) is important, to comply with British Standard 7953 (1999).

Matting Width Recommendations - The matting should span the full width of the door opening, with an extension of at least one meter on each side. In higher traffic areas, a greater extension might be necessary. This extra width accommodates various entry angles and ensures thorough cleaning of both foot and wheeled traffic.

The most effective matting system is a 3-part zonal system, learn more about this approch in our Clean Off  Zones Blog below:
