GUIDE TO SPECIFYING ENTRANCE MATTING
GUIDE TO SPECIFYING ENTRANCE MATTING
Specifying an entrance mat to meet the correct design, building regs and safety requirements for maximum removal of dirt and moisture can be a daunting task, especially with so many different mat types available. We have broken down the most important factors to consider when specifying an entrance mat for your project.
Things to consider:
- Matting width / length
- Traffic type / frequency
- Application / battling the elements
1. What is the recommended entrance mat size?
We recommend:
- 3 to 5 metre mat length for normal dirt pick-up
- 6 to 7 metres for medium dirt pick-up
- 8 to 10 meters for high dirt pick-up with heavy traffic
For areas with limited space we still recommend a minimum mat length of 2 metres (as per BS 7953) to account for accessibility of a full wheelchair rotation.
By dividing the floor mat system into three distinct zones, we can fully optimise cleaning.
Firstly, a clean-off zone removes coarse dirt; this is followed by a second, more intensive cleaning zone; and finally, the third zone captures fine dirt and moisture.
Specifying a zonal system will prevent slips and trips, providing excellent performance.
2. How many footfalls will the mat receive/ what load will the mat need to take?
We have a wide variety of mats suitable from applications which only experience light footfall traffic (for example, cafés) up to being sites with forklifts and cars (for example warehouses and vehicle showrooms).
To make the specification process simple, have a look at our product selector chart attached.
3. What elements will the mat be exposed to? Is the mat indoor or outdoor?
For indoor use, choose from our ribbed carpet, brush strip, cassette brush or scraper bar inserts, all of which are suitable for the removal of heavy soiling or moisture. For outdoor use, then mats with cassette brush, grooved rubber and brush strip are all suitable for high moisture ingress areas.
Other important factors:
Following these simple steps should help you to select and specify the most appropriate matting system to meet your requirements. However, should you have any queries or need advice on any element of product selection or mat design, our friendly and experienced support team is always happy to help. Choosing exactly the right system will not only give your entrance the look and feel you want, but will also keep the floors of your building clean and minimise the risk of slips and falls.
