The Tactile and Visual Guidance entrance matting system is a system developed by Geggus to incorporate a clear guidance line through the entrance mat. This guidance line can be combined seamlessly into the design of public and private buildings such as hospitals and health centres so that the essential floor indicators, necessary for orientation, are not compromised across the entrance mat. The tactile guidance system is designed to aid blind and visually impaired persons with access and passage throughout a building. There is a correct procedure to adopt when installing an entrance mat. Firstly, correct measurement is necessary, and where a shaped entrance mat is required, creating a template may be preferable. When care has been taken to form a suitable and appropriate mat well, our entrance mats should simply roll out into place with ease. Whilst installation of a Geggus entrance mat is straightforward, there are a few different procedures for differing layouts, i.e. larger mats or shaped mats. The type of entrance matting you require depends on a number of factors. For example, the location of the mat; indoors or outdoors, the type of footfall and the area from which the foot traffic will arrive at the mat. The loading requirement from the entrance mat will be different in a domestic location to that of a commercial or industrial entrance mat. In general, the most popular entrance mat is the Geggus Top Clean Trend Ribbed carpet, 22mm. This is suitable for most locations; however, this is not suitable for outdoor use. For outdoor use, the most popular entrance mat is the Top Clean Trend Grooved Rubber and Cassette brush. This entrance mat is ideal for heavily frequented entrance areas, particularly as a transition mat before an indoor mat. The Grooved Rubber and Cassette brush is great for initial dirt, grit and moisture removal before entering a building.

An open structure Entrance mat is a mat that has gaps to allow grit and dirt to fall through the mat and into the matwell. This is typically achieved by having profiles along the width of the mat, held together with a tensioned wire. The profiles have small, rubber spacers between the profiles to keep a uniform gap. The big advantage of the open structure entrance mats is that the grit and dirt is not carried on into the building by the next person walking through, as it does not sit on top of the mat. The open structure entrance matting also helps reduce the amount of contaminants building up on the surface of the mat, therefore prolonging the life of the mat. Open Structure entrance matting is particularly important in areas of commercial or industrial use such as shopping centres, airports and supermarkets where traffic and footfall over the entrance mat is high.

Geggus do have an entrance mat solution to aid blind and visually impaired persons. The tactile guidance system can aid orientation for the blind and visually impaired. This innovative safety concept can be incorporated into all system combinations to include a wide range of colour choices.

The cleaning frequency of our Entrance Mats will be dependent on the intensity of use and the amount of dirt collected: Low traffic dirt volumes - Simply use a high-power suction vacuum cleaner on the surface of the entrance mat and then roll up the mat to clean the collected dirt and moisture in the mat bed. Moderate traffic and dirt volumes - Use a high-power vacuum cleaner to remove surface dirt; then roll the mat out of the frame and clean away any dirt and moisture from the mat bed with a brush. High traffic and dirt volumes - As well as following the steps for low and moderate traffic, in areas where the entrance mat is installed in a commercial or industrial location, use a high-pressure cleaner to remove all remaining dirt. Allow sufficient drying time (we recommended overnight), after which the mat will be fully functioning again. Cleaning may also be carried out with a standard floor-cleaning machine. Generally, a shopping centre requires an entrance mat with a high level of moisture retention as well as removal of small grit and sand particle. Typically, an entrance mat of ribbed carpet is the most appropriate mat for a shopping centre. As trolley’s and heavy foot traffic are prevalent across entrance mats in shopping centres, we recommend our Stabil range, which can take a static load weight of 6,000kg and shopping trolleys up to 1,000 kg for the 10mm height option and up to 1,600kg for the 22mm option. Top Clean Stabil is suitable for shopping trolleys and transport trolleys. In shopping centres, where there is a requirement for the entrance mat to be crossed by cars or even fork lifts the best options would be our Top Clean Objekt or High42, which can take a static loading of 10,000kg and is crossable by lift trucks, fork lift trucks and cars up to a weight of 2,500kg and 3,000kg respectively.

The best choice of entrance mat for use in an airport would typically be Geggus Top Clean Stabil 22mm. Top Clean Stabil 22mm can take a trolley loading up to 1,600kg. Geggus Top Clean Stabil 22mm entrance mats are also suitable for areas with a heavy daily footfall loading (above 2,800). There are however several factors to consider when specifying entrance matting for an airport entrance. In particularly busy airport locations, with extreme daily footfall (above 5,000), the Geggus Objekt or High42 would be more suitable. These ranges can take a trolley loading of 2,500kg and 3,000kg respectively. In airport entrances, we’d nearly always recommend a 3-zone approach (link to zonal page) to specifying and implementing the entrance matting system. The best entrance mat to use with shopping trollies depends on several factors, such as daily footfall and the area from which foot traffic will be arriving from. From our Geggus Entrance Matting range we have several mats suitable to take loading from a shopping trolley. The Top Clean Trend range from 17mm or above, Top Clean Stabil, Objekt and High42, are all suitable entrance mat ranges to take the loading of a shopping trolley. In most circumstances we would recommend the Top Clean Stabil, as a great choice for a balance of function and cost when choosing an entrance mat for use with shopping trollies. In areas where shopping trollies are used, we’d always recommend a 3-zone approach (link to zonal page) to specifying and implementing the entrance matting system.

The best entrance mat to use with a fork lift is either Top Clean Objekt or High42. Top Clean Objekt has a permissible static load of 10,000kg per 100cm2 of area, and in terms of weight of a forklift, the entrance mat is crossable up to 2,500kg. The Top Clean High42 entrance matting however, has a permissible static load of 10,000kg per 100cm2 of area, and in terms of weight of a forklift, the entrance mat is crossable up to 3,000kg.

Yes, we do have an entrance mat range suitable for extreme heavy use, such as in entrance where the mat has to be crossed by forklifts, cars and other small vehicles. Our Top Clean Objekt 22 and Top Clean High 42 ranges of entrance matting are particularly suited to areas of high and extremely heavy load. Top Clean Objekt has a permissible static load of 10,000kg per 100cm2 of area, but in terms of weight of a forklift, the entrance mat is crossable up to 2,500kg. The Top Clean High42 entrance matting however, has a permissible static load of 10,000kg per 100cm2 of area, but in terms of weight of a forklift, the entrance mat is crossable up to 3,000kg.

The best entrance mat for removal of sand, grit, fine and course particles would be the cassette brush, particularly if the mat was to be positioned outdoors. For an entrance mat situated indoors, where moisture removal is an additional requirement to removal of sand and grit and other fine and course dirt particles, then we would recommend using a combination of ribbed carpet with cassette brush. Most products in our Geggus Entrance Matting range are suitable for disabled access and wheelchairs. There are a few matting types that are not deemed as completely suitable, for example the use of a cassette brush. This is because the brushes can move, which is not ideal if someone has an issue with balance for example. Where you see the wheel chair logo next to a product you can be sure that the mat in question has been tested….. Geggus have done extensive research into innovative entrance mat solutions for disabled access, visually impaired persons and safety in general. Geggus have developed a range of entrance mats to address these issues, such as the Visual and Tactile Guidance System and the Safe Clean Trend

The best entrance mat for removing fine dirt and damp/wet is a ribbed carpet entrance mat. Each of the Geggus ranges are available with a surface of ribbed carpet. The ribbed carpet is perfectly suited to absorbing the damp/wet from crossing traffic and at the same time a great solution for removing fine dirt. The ribbed carpet is easily cleaned and the gaps between the profiles of the open structure matting from Geggus allow fine dirt and particles to collect, rather than sit on top of the surface and be taken into the building by the next person or vehicle to cross the mat.

For use outdoors, any of our entrance matting ranges are suitable, however the important point to note is that not all of our surfaces and combinations of the mat are suitable. Ribbed carpet is not suitable for use outdoors, therefore any combination of mat using ribbed carpet cannot be used. Our recommendation as the best entrance mat to use outdoors would be a combination of Grooved Rubber and cassette brush. This combination offers stability, an element of moisture removal, but importantly, offers a good level of removal of course dirt, grit and sand. For areas where the traffic and load are considered normal, our Top Clean Trend mat is the most suitable, however, in areas where traffic and loading is high or extreme we have other solutions. We recommend, where possible and practicable, to split the entrance area into zones. Zone 1 – Outdoor use – Course dirt, sand and grit collecting area. The mat must be suitable for use in outdoor locations. Zone 2 – Passage Zone – Heavily frequented entrance area – The mat here is required to remove additional coarse as well as fine dirt and an element of moisture removal. Zone 3 – Indoor use – Fine Dirt and damp collecting area. The primary requirement in this area is moisture removal so a mat of ribbed carpet or at least ribbed carpet in combination with another element such as brush strip is crucial.
